Find your way around the keyboard

A calm introduction to movement keys, shortcuts and building familiarity with PC game controls.

Keyboard keys

Learn the actions before the shortcuts

Open the controls menu and identify movement, interaction, pause and the most common action. Games do not all use the same layout, so follow the on-screen prompts for the game you are playing. You do not need to memorise every shortcut before starting; learn a small set and add more when the game introduces them.

Use a low-pressure practice area

A tutorial or practice mode gives you space to make mistakes without holding up a team. Practise movement and camera control separately, then combine them. If you keep pressing the wrong key, slow down and repeat the action deliberately instead of attempting a more complicated sequence.

Make useful changes, not constant changes

Remapping can help when an action is difficult to reach, but repeatedly changing controls can make learning harder. Keep a simple note of your layout and test it for a few sessions. Check for conflicts: assigning a key to a new action may remove an existing binding or behave differently in another mode.

Keep menus and communication in mind

Find the pause key, inventory key and any communication controls before joining a group. Know how to mute voice chat and how to leave a session through the game’s menu. When typing in chat, ensure that the input field has focus so your message does not trigger gameplay actions instead.

Let familiarity develop

Keyboard confidence comes from repeated use rather than owning a particular accessory. Keep the keyboard and mouse in a comfortable position and take breaks when you need them. Use a controller if it suits a game or your preferences better. Choosing an input method is a practical decision, not a test of whether you belong in PC gaming.
